No matter your thoughts on climate change one point, I hope we can all agree with, is that humans use too much plastic and it is becoming a massive ecological problem that is choking our oceans.  The UK produces 2.3 million tons of plastic packing waste per year, only 35% of that is recycled. Micro plastics can now be found on all parts of our planet from the Arctic oceans to the Mariana Trench. The only way this issue will be resolved is if we all use less single use plastic. Easier said than done of course which is why I’ve compiled this list of handy hints.  Did you know its going to take your detergent bottle 100-1000 years to decompose? We will all long gone before it goes.  Below are some products that I use in my everyday life that have enabled me to cut down on our family’s single use plastic.

Smol

Domestic cleaning products, which include; laundry tablets, dishwasher tables and surface sprays. Their tablets are concentrated but lower in chemicals, their packaging is totally plastic free and the products don’t contain any micro plastics. They offer a subscription service that delivers at regular intervals to your door.

Milk and More

The death of the daily milk delivery was definitely a step back for humanity, fortunately Milk and More are bringing back milk delivered to your door in glass bottles. The company’s ethos is to encourage people to eat well and live more sustainably by supporting smaller suppliers who they know and trust.  The More in the name refers to the various other fresh produce they will deliver along with your milk, just update your order in advance of the delivery and enjoy the fresh produce delivered to your door.

Seep or Eco-living

Two great British brands that are championing plastic free eco-friendly alternatives to everyday items such as washing up brushes, ear buds and bath sponges.

Jungle Culture

An estimated 67 million disposable razors/razor heads were purchased in the UK in 2017, most of which are now in landfill. There is a simple solution. Swap your generic razor to a safety razor.  Don’t believe the marketing, you will get a better closer shave, your plastic waste will be cut and your wallet will thank you. Not every advance in human history has been a good one but they often have clever marketing behind them, razors are very much a case in point.

Restore Bath

This company is Bath centric, but many cities and towns now have something similar.  It’s a simple concept of using glass

bottles rather than plastic for products like body wash and washing liquid.  Using their brown glass recycled glass bottles, which you can return to their HQ or enjoy their milkman-like service where you can leave your empty bottles on your doorstep and their refill fairies simply refill them overnight.
